A New Vision for Knowledge Extraction

In 2009, Hatha Systems used new technical standards to build a prototype of a next-generation knowledge extraction solution. The initial prototype won the Enterprise Software Solution Best in Show award at the FOSE government technology conference that year. After extensive market testing to understand the needs of the marketplace, that prototype was developed, by co-founders Rama Moorthy and Ioan Mihai (Mike) Oara, into the software solution known today as Knowledge Refinery Solution.

What has set Knowledge Refinery apart, since its first debut at the FOSE conference eight years ago, is its ability to bridge the divide between the business and technical layers within an organization to enable knowledge extraction to be accessible to both business and technical users.

“From a business standpoint, we can provide information to allow a business person to view the output we are delivering and actually make sense of it,” says Moorthy, who serves as Hatha Systems CEO. “Business processes are fully documented and traceable so at any given time business users can know exactly what is going on and view the most current state of the [comprehensive] implementation.”

This differentiator means clients use Knowledge Refinery not just for changing, updating or maintaining applications, but for facilitating business objectives. Chief financial officers use the solution to collect information they need for audits. Chief data officers rely on Knowledge Refinery to collect information to improve the efficiency with which data is managed. Companies can use Knowledge Refinery to target which applications they need to carve out for selling off a division. In mergers and acquisitions, business executives can easily identify which applications need to be fully integrated with another entity to reduce duplication and redundancy.

Just as Knowledge Refinery bridges the gap between business and technology, the product came about through a blend of the different business and technical backgrounds of its co-founders. Moorthy, with nearly 30 years of experience working for large corporations in the enterprise software, enterprise security and applications management space, had worked in new market and new product development, for companies like Siemens, Network Associates and Sun Microsystems. Through those roles, she gained an experience in both client solution delivery and technology needs for different market sectors. Oara, with a background in math and computer science and 30 plus years in extraction and analysis, has built and analyzed large scale mission critical applications in the banking and government sectors. He has innovated and developed commercial solutions in reverse engineering including the development of Knowledge Refinery. He serves as Hatha Systems CTO.

Moorthy says the Knowledge Refinery Solution addresses an issue that has plagued large enterprises since companies first began to use software to automate business operations decades ago. As more and more business processes have been managed through software automation, an environment has emerged where business leaders don’t understand the applications used to execute their business operations.

“Basically, there is a significant gap [in knowledge] between those who run the business and those who are doing the implementation of the business operations to make it efficient. This gap has existed for 35 years or more,” Moorthy said. “What we have done is essentially created a technology and business solution so users can extract, fully document and have comprehensive and traceable knowledge into the portfolio of applications that is running their business.”
